CHARLESTON, S.C. - Four Newberry guards scored in double figures, but it was not enough to overcome Division I opponent Charleston Southern as Newberry fell, 91-74, at the CSU Fieldhouse Thursday night.  Newberry (5-5) has lost three of its last four games, while Charleston Southern (5-4) breaks a three-game losing streak after starting the season 4-1.

The contest was close throughout most of the first half, indicated by seven lead changes and three ties, the last coming at 29-29 with just under six minutes remaining.  Jerell Jeter (Greenville, S.C.) tipped in an Alonzo Hinds (Freeport, Bahamas) miss to even the score, but CSU went on a 13-3 run on its way to a 48-37 halftime lead.

Newberry drew as close as six with a 10-5 rally to open the half.  Seven Ezumba (Anumbra, Nigeria), in his first action as an Indian, rebounded and tipped in a missed shot to cap the spurt.  The Indians fought back a second time to trail 65-57, but CSU rattled off nine straight points and the lead would stay in double digits until the final horn.

Hinds led Newberry with 17 points, followed closely by Zach Chandler (Greenville, S.C.) with 14, Sammy Monroe (Mt. Olive, N.C.) with 12, and Michael Dease (Bennettsville, S.C.) rounding out the double-digit scorers with 11.  Ezumba headed the rebounding charge with 9.

Charleston Southern got 21 points from long-distance threat Trent Drafts (Beaufort, S.C.).  Vernon Huger (Charleston, S.C.) produced a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards, and Dwayne Jackson (Ft. Myers, Fla.) added 15 points.  Donnell Covington (Goose Creek, S.C.) scored 10 points.

Combined with poor shooting, Newberry lost the rebounding battle, 33-44, to the bigger Buccaneers.

Next up for Newberry is a rematch with Erskine College on the road January 3.  Erskine pulled off the upset in Eleazer Arena on December 10.
