NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry men's basketball team missed two late shots, giving Erskine College a 61-56 win this evening at Eleazer Arena. The Flying Fleet, thanks to double-digit scoring from four starters, overcame a 10-point deficit in the first half for the victory. Newberry was led by junior guard Alonzo Hinds (Freeport, Bahamas) with 15. The Indians fall to 5-4 overall, while Erskine improves to 2-4.
Both teams struggled early, as neither squad put up points until Newberry forward Eric Nwawel (Cameroon, Africa) scored the game's first basket at the 17:48 mark. The Indians picked up the intensity shortly thereafter, building a 21-11 lead halfway through the opening period. Throughout the run, the Newberry scoring attack featured three treys, two by Hinds and one by forward Tommy Burke (Newberry, S.C.). Erskine was able to erase the lead and take a 22-21 advantage minutes later, thanks to an 11-0 run.
Play remained tight for the remainder of the half but Newberry was able to build another small lead at 31-25 with 1:13 to go. Erskine guard T.J. Taylor (Gastonia, N.C.) sank a pair of free throws, making the score 31-27 at the break.
Hinds led all scorers in the first half with eight, while forward Sammy Monroe (Mt. Olive, N.C.) added six. Senior Michael Dease (Bennettsville, S.C.) and junior Zach Chandler (Greenville, S.C.) each contributed five. For the Flying Fleet, Taylor led the way with seven, while Matt Odom (Six Mile, S.C.) and Lindokuhle Sibankulu (Durban, South Africa) chipped in six a piece. Forward Reed Long (Piedmont, S.C.) dished five first-half assists. The Indians were out shot 47.6% to 33.3% from the field.
Erskine came out firing in the second half as they cut into the Newberry lead and even went ahead, 35-34, at the 14:37 mark. The action went back and forth, which produced the gameís fifth tie, until the Flying Fleet were able to build a five-point, 47-42 lead. Burke canned his third three-pointer of the game to slice into the Erskine lead, but the Flying Fleet responded with an Odom three, making the score 50-45 with 6:33 to go.
The Erskine lead fluctuated between two and five points for the next several minutes. The Indians never gave up, however, as they came roaring back with an 11-5 run. Guard Cory Etheridge (Columbia, S.C.) drained a jumper, cutting the lead to two, 55-53, and Hinds converted on a huge three-pointer on the next possession, giving Newberry their first second-half lead in nearly 12 minutes, 56-55. The Indians missed two clutch shots with under a minute remaining, while Erskine recorded six of six charity shots down the stretch, making the score final.
On the game, Hinds led all scorers with 15, including three three-pointers. He also led Newberry in rebounding with eight and assists with four. Chandler and Burke added 10 and nine, respectively. Erskine was led by Odomís 14, as well as 12 points from Long. Taylor and Craig Williams (Paris, Ky.) recorded 11 a piece. Reed led the way on the glass with eight, as well as in assists with five.
Up next for the Indians is a road trip to Anderson College on December 17. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Flying Fleet will prepare for Newberry again, as their next contest is a home match-up with the Indians. The game is slated for January 3 at 7:30 p.m.
