Furious rally comes up short; men's basketball falls 78-70 to Queens
Saturday, December 3, 2005 | by Zach Chandler named to all-tournament team

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Newberry trailed by 20 with 6:28 remaining in the game but trimmed the lead to six with under a minute left using furious defensive pressure.  The effort was not enough, as Queens prevailed, 78-70, in the Sodexho Classic Tournament championship game Saturday night in Ovens Athletic Center.  Guard Zach Chandler (Greenville, S.C.) was named to the all-tournament team for his 32 points in two games.

Newberry dropped to 4-2 and won its second runner-up trophy under head coach Shaun Golden's tenure.  The Indians captured second place in the Mt. Olive Pickle Classic last season.

Queens (5-1) used a 12-1 run to end the first half, expanding its two-point lead to 39-26 at intermission.  Royals guard and tournament MVP Timon Farley (Charlotte, N.C.) scored 11 of his 22 points in the first period.  Newberry guard Alonzo Hinds (Freeport, Bahamas) scored 10 in the opening stanza.

The Royals opened the second period the way they concluded the first, going on a 12-6 run to put the lead at a comfortable 19 points.  Following physical play at the 12:08 mark after a Newberry offensive rebound, Golden was issued two technical fouls.  Farley knocked down all four foul shots for Queens to open a 55-32 margin.  The hosts opened their largest lead at 63-37 less than two minutes later, and the Newberry comeback would begin.  Seven straight Indian points, five of those by Sammy Monroe (Mt. Olive, N.C.), followed by another 10-5 spurt, helped close the gap to a manageable 14 points with 3:13 left.  The Indians scored 12 of the final 16 points, but it would not be enough.

Hinds scored 20 points in the loss.  Monroe continued his streak of double-digit scoring games, recording 13 in tonight's contest along with two blocks.  Chandler scored 11 markers.

Newberry will return to action Wednesday night at home against Limestone following the women's game with Morris College which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
