CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Newberry guard Zach Chandler (Greenville, S.C.) and three other Indians scored in double digits as Newberry convincingly defeated Barry University, 99-75, in the opening round of the Sodexho Classic hosted by Queens University of Charlotte.  Chandler scored 17 of his team-high 21 points in the first half.

Newberry (4-2) led by only eight at the half, but went on a 19-6 run to open the second period, keyed by six points from Clemente Martin (Freeport, Bahamas).  The Indians extended the lead to 24 on four occasions, including the final margin.

Barry suffers its first loss of the year, dropping to 3-1.

Newberry used a similar run in the first period, this one 11-1, to open up a quick 20-7 lead.  Full-court pressure applied by the Indians' backcourt led to a series of scores where the ball never made it across halfcourt.

Junior guard Alonzo Hinds (Freeport, Bahamas) scored 17 in the winning effort.  Sammy Monroe (Mt. Olive, N.C.) continued his streak of scoring in double figures in the Newberry scarlet, notching 14.  Monroe has not failed to produce at least 10 points in each game.  Martin added 10 points for Newberry.

Monroe, Eric Nwawel (Cameroon, Africa) and Jerrell Jeter (Greenville, S.C.) each blocked two shots in the stellar defensive effort.  Newberry forced 23 turnovers and allowed the Buccaneers only a 34.7% shooting percentage from the floor, while converting just under 60 per cent of its baskets on the evening.

Barry forward Melvin Triche (Syracuse, N.Y.) had a career-best 34 points in the loss.  Teammate Felipe Barrios (Miami, Fla.) added 10 points.

Newberry advances to play the winner of the Queens-West Virginia Tech matchup in tomorrow's championship game at 7:30.  Barry will play the loser in the consolation, scheduled to begin at 5:30.
