Saturday, November 26, 2005 | by Five Indians score 10+ points, Martin leads the way with 16

AIKEN, S.C. - After leading by 16 at the half, Newberry fought off a Lander attack that pulled the Bearcats within five in the second half as the Indians recorded their first win over Lander in the South Atlantic-Peach Belt Clash history, 87-68. Clemente Martin scored 16 as five Indians scored more than 10 points. Sammy Monroe recorded his second double-double of the season and is the only Indian this year to record such a feat. Prior to Saturday’s game, Newberry had not taken a game from Lander in 20 meetings, the last win coming on Feb. 10, 1992, at 76-62 Indian victory.

The win is just the fourth for Newberry (3-1) in the SAC-Peach Belt Clash in school history, bringing their all-time record up to 4-14. Newberry defeated USC Aiken last year in the two-day event, but fell to Lander, 83-77. The Bearcats record now falls to 1-4 on the season.

Michael Griffin led Lander with 17 points while Scottie Smith followed closely with 16. Newberry was able to wear the Bearcats down with a deep, talented bench as the Indians outscored Lander in points from the bench, 47-19. Newberry held a lead throughout almost the entire first half, going up by as much as 19 at the 1:26 mark and taking a 16 point lead into the locker room at halftime. Newberry’s bench scored 19 of the Indians’ 42 bench in the first half.
Four different Indians scored 12 points in the win, including Monroe, Michael Dease, Zach Chandler and Jerrell Jeter. Monroe’s double-double matched points with rebounds as he recorded 12 of each.

The Indians, who shot 64% in the first half, struggled throughout most of the second half as their shooting percentage from the field fell to as low as 35% as Lander pulled to within four at the 13:24 mark as Newberry led 54-50. Newberry and Lander battled back and forth as Newberry took a 70-60 lead before pulling away, sealing the Indians’ third win of the young 2005-06 campaign.

Newberry’s key to victory Saturday night was rebounds, especially in the defensive category. The Indians had 38 total rebounds to Lander’s 29 and out-rebounded Lander defensively, 27-19.

Newberry next sees action on Tuesday, Nov. 29 as the Indians travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to face NCAA Division I-competitor Winthrop University. The Indians and the Eagles will tip off at 7 p.m. at Winthrop Coliseum in Newberry’s first of two games against NCAA Div. I opponents this season. Newberry will also play at Charleston Southern on Dec. 22. Tuesday’s game marks a return to familiar grounds for Golden, who was an assistant coach at Winthrop from 1998-2002, helping lead the Eagles to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Winthrop appeared in the 2005 NCAA Tournament briefly, before exiting quickly after a 74-64 defeat at the hands of No. 3-seed Gonzaga in the first round in Tucson, Ariz.
