AIKEN, S.C. – Sammy Monroe notched his third straight game with double digit scoring with 19 points but couldn’t stop USC Aiken’s Richard Blocker’s 16 points in the second half as the Indians dropped their first game of the season, 83-74 at USC Aiken in the South Atlantic-Peach Belt Clash. The Indians had 16 steals on the game compared to the Pacers’ seven. Newberry closes out the SAC-Peach Belt Clash with Lander University on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., in Aiken, S.C.

“We did not play as well as we are capable of tonight,” said head coach Shaun Golden. “We need to work together as a team more and work on our cohesiveness on the court. It is vital for us to do that, especially when we play tough teams like USC Aiken. We will get another good challenge tomorrow against Lander and need to come out to a better start.”

Alonzo Hinds added 18 points for Newberry while Zach Chandler, who had five steals, had 10 points for the Scarlet and Gray. USC Aiken was led by Richard Blocker with 22 points, 16 in the second half alone, and Arnold Coates, who added 11.

USC Aiken took the largest lead of the first half early on with a 15-5 lead on the heels of a 14-3 run. Clemente Martin broke up that run with a three-pointer at the 12:23 mark.

Newberry slowly battled back, pulling within four points on four separate occasions within a three minute time span. The Indians’ hard work paid off in the waning moments as Monroe slammed home a dunk with two seconds remaining, making it a one point ballgame at 39-38 Pacers. Zach Chandler got a steal and was fouled with no time remaining and tied the game at 39 to end the half, going one-for-two on the free throws, as he capped off a 7-0 run for Newberry to close the half.

Richard Blocker was the star of the second half for USC Aiken and the Indians were unable to stop him. Blocker had 16 points and eight rebounds in the second session as the Pacers shot 47% from the field while Newberry struggled, shooting only 39%.

Newberry took their second and final lead of the game early on as Monroe put up a basket and a free throw after being fouled on the shot, putting Newberry up 42-39. Blocker got a basket, pulling the Pacers within one before Monroe sunk another basket in for the 44-41 lead.

USC Aiken charged back with a 9-0 run to take a 50-44 lead and never looked back. Newberry continued to try and battle back and came as close as three at the 63-60 mark but USC Aiken pulled away for good after that.
