Indians win home opener, 86-80, over Anderson College

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College used a balanced attack and clutch play down the stretch to fend off visiting Anderson College, 86-80 tonight in men’s college basketball action at Eleazer Arena.  The visiting Trojans (0-1) cut a 17-point halftime deficit to three in the final minute, but free throws from Matt Alexander (Atlanta, Ga.) and Zach Chandler (Greenville, S.C.) extended the lead to six and iced the game.

The Indians (1-0) used a quick start to lead 24-13 after eight minutes, and kept the lead around ten for the next six minutes.  Three-point baskets by Chandler, Alonzo Hinds (Freeport, Bahamas) and Cory Etheridge (Columbia, S.C.) followed by Chandler’s layup pushed the lead to 20 with 5:26 in the first period.  Newberry settled for a 17-point lead at the break.  Chandler led Newberry in the first half with eight points, while Randy Javois (Anguilla, West Indies) paced Anderson with 12.

Within five minutes of intermission, Anderson had trimmed the lead to eight.  A pair of treys by J.R. Howell (Clemson, S.C.) closed the gap to 56-48.  The Indian lead hovered around ten over the next six minutes.  Anderson used a 13-7 spurt, capped by Alfred Boykin’s (Fayetteville, Ga.) to draw within five at 77-72, but Newberry’s Sammy Monroe (Mt. Olive, N.C.) answered with a two-handed dunk.  Boykin scored Anderson’s next six points, punctuated with a gliding dunk of his own to close the gap to five with 44 seconds left.  A steal and subsequent layup by O’Tey Sellers (Holly Hill, S.C.) drew Anderson to 83-80, but Alexander’s and Chandler’s foul shots provided the final cushion.

Anderson’s Javois tallied a game-high 24 points, followed by teammate Boykin with 19 and a game-high 12 boards.  Monroe and Chandler paced the Indians with 14 each in the first action for both in Newberry uniforms.  Michael Dease (Bennettsville, S.C.) scored 11 points on three-for-five shooting from beyond the arc.

Howell had 17 points for the Trojans, a team that only saw action from eight players.  In contrast, Newberry used 14 players, ten of whom logged more than ten minutes each.

Newberry continues play at home, hosting North Greenville College Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.  Anderson returns to action Friday in Florence, facing Fayetteville State in Francis Marion’s tournament.
