ROCK HILL, S.C. – Newberry's Michael Dease was named the South Atlantic Conference men's basketball “Player of the Week”, league officials announced today.
Dease, a junior guard from Bennettsville, S.C., averaged 20.3 points and was a perfect 15-of-15 (1.000) from the free throw line in leading Newberry to a 2-1 week, including two straight SAC wins.
The Pfeiffer University transfer scored game-highs in all three of his contests this week. After tallying 15 points in a 73-71 loss to Southern Wesleyan Wednesday, Dease scored 23 points apiece in South Atlantic Conference victories over Mars Hill (64-57) and Carson-Newman (82-78) on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
Against the Eagles on the road, Dease hit five three-pointers and added six rebounds and four assists in the team's upset win. He also hit two free throws in the waning seconds in that game to ice the victory.
On the season, Dease is Newberry’s leading scorer, averaging 16.3 points per contest. Dease is also converting almost 84 percent of his free throw attempts.
The South Atlantic Conference “Player of the Week” is voted on by the league's eight sports information directors.
