Men's basketball fall in first game of SAC/PBC Clash vs. Lander

CLINTON, S.C. - Lander University’s sophomore guard Jarred Jackson (Columbia, SC) led five Bearcats in double figures with a team-high 15 points en route to a 83-77 victory over Newberry College in the first game of the 8th Annual South Atlantic Conference/Peach Belt Conference Clash held at Presbyterian College Friday night.

In the first half, Newberry went on a 15-5 run to close out the half, breaking a 25-25 to lead 40-30 at intermission. The Indians shot 41.2% from the field while holding the Bearcats to 36.7% from the floor. Sophomore Tommy Burke (Newberry, S.C.) and sophomore center Eric Nwawel (Cameroon, Africa) combined for 25 of Newberry’s 40 points. Lander was led in the first half by senior guard Richard Gilliam (Fort Worth, Texas) who tallied seven points.

The second half saw the Bearcats chip away at the lead and moved ahead for good at the 3:47 mark on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Jason Davis (Fountain Inn, S.C.). The Bearcats would outscore the Indians 9-5 down the stretch to secure the victory.

Joining Jackson for scoring honors with the Bearcats was junior guard Jahi Rawlings (Spartanburg, S.C.) who tallied 12 points while Davis added 11 points. Junior forward Joe McEachern (Columbia, S.C.) and Gillam added 10 points apiece.Newberry was led by Burke with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Nwawel added 18 points. Junior guard Michael Dease (Bennetsville, S.C.) also chipped in 18 points for the Indians.

Lander improves to 4-1 on the season while Newberry falls to 2-3. Newberry will take on USC Aiken tomorrow at 6:00 pm while Lander will play host Presbyterian College at 8:00 pm.
