NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry College men’s basketball program announced the signing of three student athletes to letters of intent today.  Matt Alexander, Brandon Bruce, and Joseph Chilton will play for the Indians in 2004-05.

Alexander, a 6’2” point guard, played for Eddie Martin at Norcross High last season, leading the Blue Devils to a #1 state ranking in Georgia 5A basketball for most of the season.  He averaged eight points and five assists last season, and will join his twin sister, Monica Alexander, at Newberry College, also on a basketball scholarship.

Bruce, a 6’2” guard from Lexington High School in nearby Lexington, averaged 12 points, six rebounds, and three assists per game at the wing position under head coach Bailey Harris.  He was voted All-Region and selected to the North/South All-Star Game as a senior.

Chilton comes to Newberry from Hayesville, N.C., with All-State, All-Region, and All-Conference honors.  He was named Most Outstanding Player of the North Carolina 1A State Championships, leading the Yellow Jackets to the state title.  Playing for head coach Michael Cottrell, the 6’7” post player averaged 18 points and 10 boards per contest.  He was named to the Asheville Citizen-Times All-Western North Carolina team and earned MVP honors at the Blue-White All-Star Game.  Chilton brings the same work ethic to the classroom, earning the honor “Senior Academic Standout”.  He is set to graduate in the top 20 of his class.
