Indians complete perfect home stand; win 79-66 over North Greenville
Wednesday, January 7, 2004

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College won its third straight game Wednesday night at Eleazer Arena, and men’s head basketball coach David Conrady defeated his former team, North Greenville College, by a final score of 79-66 in the first meeting between the teams since Conrady departed the Crusaders.

Newberry (5-6), down one at the half, capitalized on an 8-1 run to grab the lead for good over North Greenville (4-8), a gritty squad that would not go away.  It was not until the 71-second mark that the Indians secured a double-digit lead and continued to hit free throws as North Greenville was forced to foul.

Crusader guard Rob Wilton led all scorers with 29 points, adding nine rebounds to pace his team in both categories.  Newberry’s Rashaad Carter notched 23 points, a team high and his second-best performance of the season.  Fellow senior Brandon Moses poured in 14, and sophomore guard Michael Dease scored 13 points in the win.

Outstanding Newberry free throw shooting made the difference in the game.  The Indians went 16-for-18 from the stripe, and a perfect 14-for-14 in the second half.  North Greenville finished at .500 (13-26) in free throw percentage.

North Greenville held a 34-33 edge at intermission, in part due to a plus-four rebounding edge and two less turnovers than the home team.  By game’s end, Newberry had turned the tables in the turnover department, forcing 22 to its 17.

Newberry begins conference play on the road this Saturday at 4 p.m. at Mars Hill, preceded by women’s action at 2.
