Indians strong on the boards in home win over Livingston

NEWBERRY, S.C. Ė Newberry College out rebounded visiting Livingstone College 52-28 to rout the Blue Bears 88-53 Wednesday night in menís basketball action in Eleazer Arena. Newberry limited the Blue Bears to just six first half rebounds on their way to the victory.

The Indians (3-6) snapped a two-game losing skid in the home win. The two teams played to a 31-all tie with three minutes to go in the first half, but the Indians put together an 8-1 run to finish the half with a 39-32 lead.

The lead stayed in the seven-point range for five minutes until the Indians put together a 17-4 run over the next five minutes to lead 62-41 at the midway point of the half. Newberry never looked back as the lead got to 20 on a lay-up by senior Rashaad Carter (North Charleston, S.C.). Newberry never lost the 20-point edge for the rest of the game.

The Blue Bears (1-9) had 30 turnovers in the contest, and were held to just 36.0 percent (18-for-50) shooting from the floor, including 0-for-4 from the three-point arc in the second half.

Newberry shot 47.1 percent (33-for-70) from the floor in the game, and logged season-highs in free throws made (15) and assists (22).

The Blue Bears were led by forward Michael Brown (Houston, Tex.), who scored 17 points. Sophomore Edwin Sampson (St. Marteen, Virgin Islands) added 14 points.

Newberrry saw a pair of double-doubles from redshirt freshman Tymere Zimmerman (Bennettsville, S.C.), who scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his first as a collegiate player. Carter scored the game-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.

Livingstone will return to CIAA conference play on January 10, when the Blue Bears host Winston-Salem State University. The Indians will play again January 5, as they host Anderson College for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
