Cougars nail a dozen threes in win versus Indians

Charleston, S.C. -- Thomas Mobley equalled his career-high with 21 points while newcomer Robert Swain added 17 points lifting the College of Charleston to a 72-47 win over Newberry in men's college basketball action before 3,247 at John Kresse Arena on Sunday.

       
Charleston improved to 5-1 with its fifth consecutive win. The Indians fell to 2-6.

       
The Cougars shot nearly 55 percent in the first half and held the Indians to just 27 percent shooting from the floor as Cof C jumped out to a 47-21 lead at intermission.

       
Newberry, which outscored the Cougars 26-25 in the second half, opened the final 20 minutes with a 10-4 run that cut the margin to 51-31 with 14:34 left.

       
Charleston answered with a 14-1 run to take its largest lead of the second half at 65-32 with 9:40 left in the game.


       
Mike Benton added 14 points, six rebounds and five blocks for the Cougars, who held a 48-37 edge in rebounding. Bernard Jackson had a game-high nine rebounds for the Cougars.

       
Brandon Moses and Rashaad Carter led the Indians with 14 and 10 points each, respectively.

       
For the game, Cof C shot 41.5 percent hitting on 27-of-65 attempts. Newberry was limited to a season low of just 29.7 percent shooting (19-64).

       
The Cougars play at Canisius on Thursday, December 18th at 7:00.
