NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College committed 19 turnovers and Southern Wesleyan University guard Jarans Rapley (Abbeville, S.C.) poured in 28 points in the Warriors’ 77-64 road win over Newberry College in men’s basketball action in Eleazer Arena Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors (2-1) jumped out to a quick nine-point lead, started by a Rapley three-pointer in the opening seconds of play.

Newberry (0-2) climbed back into the game, cutting the margin to just one point at the 9:20 mark with a pair of jumpers by guard Brandon Moses (Aiken, S.C.) and a three-pointer by forward Rashaad Carter (North Charleston, S.C.).

The Indians grabbed the lead with 4:08 in the first period on a pair of Carter free throws, but never saw the lead for the rest of the game. Southern Wesleyan forced 10 turnovers from Newberry in the first half and owned a 19-16 rebounding edge at the break.

To open the second half, the Warriors hit four of their first five shots, while Newberry turned the ball over on four of its five possessions as SWU put together a double-digit lead. The Warriors held that lead in two digits until Newberry was able to put together an 11-2 run to close the gap to just eight seven points with 5:50 to go in regulation.

Southern Wesleyan then had a pair of buckets, including a three-pointer, by forward Detroit Pendgraff (Ardmore, Ok.) and the lead came back down inside of double figures.

Pendgraff added 19 points and eight rebounds for the Warriors, while forward Brandon Allen (Laurens, S.C.) put in 16 points and seven rebounds.

Newberry was led by Moses’ 20 points, but no other Indian was able to muster double-digits in the game. Eleven Indians scored at least two points and Carter led the Indians with eight rebounds.

Southern Wesleyan travels to Furman University for a 7 p.m. game on Monday night, while the Indians play their third straight home game to open the season, hosting Lees-McRae for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
