NEWBERRY, S.C. Newberry center Adam Howell (Seneca, S.C.) scored 14 points and had a game-high 17 rebounds as Newberry College downed visiting Crossfire 88-75 Thursday night in exhibition basketball at Eleazer Arena.

Howell was the high shooter for the game as well, with a 7-for-14 night from the floor for the Indians.

Newberry ran out to a 26-23 start with clutch long-range shooting from the guards. Sophomore transfer Michael Deese (Bennettsville, S.C.) nailed four three-point baskets to lead the Indians. Newberry shot 56.1 percent (23-for-41) in the first half of play in an up-tempo game, while outrebounding Crossfire 26-16 in the first frame to lead by 15 at the break.

The second half saw Crossfire make a 12-1 run in the first four minutes and cut the lead to four at 52-48 on a physical style of play. The four point lead was capped by a three from former UNC Asheville star Randy Shepherd. Shepherd also hit four threes in the game for Crossfire.

The lead stayed in single figures until an offensive rebound and tip-in by Howell with just over 12 minutes to play.

A 14-6 run by Crossfire got the game to just two points on a pair of high percentage shots by former Gardner Webb University star Jamie Johnson.

Newberry scored 12 straight points to get the lead back to 14 as Crossfire could not close the gap any closer than seven the rest of the way.

The Indians finished with a 59-40 rebounding margin, while forcing 17 Crossfire turnovers.

Former Longwood University star Joe Jones finished with a game-high 28 points for Crossfire, which played at Charleston Southern University the night before.

Newberry opens the 2003-2004 season Wednesday night with a 7:30 p.m. contest against St. Andrews College in Eleazer Arena.
