NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College Men’s Basketball Coach David Conrady announced the signing of four players to the 2003-2004 roster. Next to wear the Scarlet and Gray will be Tommy Burke, Keith Marshall, Cory Etheridge, and David Hampton.
Burke is a local product (Newberry, S.C.), playing at nearby Mid Carolina High School. A 6-5, 185-pound center, Burke played in the North/South All-Star game earlier this season. He was an All-Region and All-State selection in South Carolina this past year. Burke averaged 21.8 points and nine rebounds, while dishing out four assists per game for the Rebels in his senior season.
Marshall is a 6-1, 180-pound guard from (St. Stephens, S.C.) who played at Timberland High School, earning a AAA State Championship this year. Marshall was a Sweet 16 MVP, an All-Region and All-State performer and also played in the North/South All-Star Game. He averaged 21.3 points, six rebounds and four assists in his senior season.
Etheridge is a 6-4 forward from (West Columbia, S.C.) who played hoops for Brookland-Cayce High School. Also a member of the North/South All-Star game, he was an All-Region V selection and his team’s MVP. He averaged 12.8 points and 8.4 rebounds this past season.
Hampton is a 6-8 post player from (Orangeburg, S.C.) who played his prep basketball at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High. O-W made it all the way to the South Carolina AAAA final four, finally falling in the Lower State Championship. He put up 11.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and three blocks per contest as a starter this past season.
“We are very excited with our 2003 recruiting class,” said Coach Conrady. “They have excelled on the court and in the classroom. It is my goal to sign the best players in our area and I feel with this class we have done that.”
