NEWBERRY – The Newberry College field hockey team (5-10, 1-6 ECAC) was defeated Sunday morning by Eastern College Athletic Conference foe Lindenwood (12-3, 6-1 ECAC) 6-1 at Setzler Field.  The Lions currently top the ECAC regular season standings.

Newberry started out strong defensively as Dakota Elzy stopped Graycen Dave’s shot heading for the right corner. Tayla Stocksdale recorded a defensive save to keep the Lions off the board in the first 10 minutes.

Lindenwood scored three goals in the first half. Elzy notched two saves in goal in the first period for Newberry.

The Wolves started out the second half strong as Kristyna Oyola registered a shot on goal and earned a penalty corner.

After the Lions scored their fourth goal, Newberry received two more penalty corners and Caitlyn Warren’s shot sailed just wide left. Warren also saw her shot saved two minutes later by the Lindenwood goalkeeper.

Newberry continued to push the pace of play towards the Lions’ side of the field. Elise Utne fired a shot on goal. Haley Smith found the rebound to score her first goal of the season. Utne tallied her first career assist and Smith notched her first career goal.
