NEWBERRY – The Newberry College field hockey team (5-9, 1-5 ECAC) posted a great defensive effort Friday night against Bellarmine (10-5, 4-2 ECAC) but fell just short, as the Wolves fell to the Knights 1-0 in an Eastern College Athletic Conference contest at Setzler Field.
Just seven minutes into the contest, Brady Keeler had a great opportunity to score that was just high of the net. In the 22nd minute, Kristyna Oyola received a pass in the circle and had her shot blocked by a Bellarmine defender.
The Knights got on the board a few minutes later. Aimee Ilgenfritz scored a tap-in goal after receiving a cross from the right side. Illgenfriz notched her seventh of the season to put Bellarmine ahead 1-0.
Early in the second half, Dakota Elzy made back-to-back saves to keep the Knights off the board. Bellarmine was able to get away only nine shots all night thanks to a strong Newberry defense.
The Wolves had one more opportunity to score on a penalty corner to end the game. Caitlyn Warren received the corner at the top of the circle and blasted a shot on goal. The Bellarmine goaltender made the save to give the Knights the victory.
Elzy totaled six saves in net for Newberry. Heather Gregory made one save in a shutout for Bellarmine.
The Wolves will return to ECAC action on Sunday when they take on Lindenwood (10-3, 4-1 ECAC). The match will begin at 11 a.m.
