NEWBERRY – The Newberry College field hockey team (10-3) held Centre (4-7) scoreless for 70 plus minutes Friday afternoon but fell just short, as the Colonels earned the 1-0 non-conference win at Setzler Field.
In the first overtime period, Caroline Brotzge received a lead pass from the midfield that led to a breakaway. She fired a shot from the right side of the circle and finished in the right corner to give Centre the 1-0 non-conference win.
Newberry had a great chance at the beginning of the game from Kristyna Oyola. She fired a shot just wide of the net after a scramble in front of the net. The Wolves also had a flurry of chances midway through the first period. Caitlyn Warren and Brady Keeler’s shots were saved by the Centre goaltender and Warren’s rebound opportunity went wide right. Newberry controlled the pace of play for the majority of the first half. The two teams were scoreless at the half.
Dakota Elzy recorded back-to-back saves midway through the second half to keep the Colonels off the board. The Wolves recorded only one shot in the second period.
Elzy stopped two opportunities in the first half of extra time. Brotzge ended the game at the 79:09 mark.
Oyola and Warren led Newberry with three shots and one shot on goal apiece. Elzy recorded four saves.
Brotzge recorded her fourth goal of the season for Centre. Kirby Roberts notched three saves in the shutout win.
Newberry plays a non-conference contest tomorrow afternoon against Sewanee (4-7). Game time is scheduled for Noon at Setzler Field.
