Jolikko Gives Newberry Heart-Stopping Win Over Queens
Tuesday, October 4, 2016 | by Bryan Eckelberg, Athletic Communications Assistant

NEWBERRYMeghan Jolikko scored her first career goal in the second overtime as her penalty shot found the back of the net to lead the Newberry College field hockey team over Queens 3-2 Tuesday night at Setzler Field.

The win continues Newberry’s first ever winning streak at three games. The Wolves are now 4-5 and Queens moves to 4-4.

Kristyna Oyola notched her second goal of the season in the 7th minute. She blasted the ball from the center of the circle after a pass from Caitlyn Warren to give Newberry a 1-0 lead. Warren tabbed her first assist of the season.

The Wolves doubled their lead in the 22nd minute as Warren scored her sixth goal of the season. She received a great leading pass from the midfield and finished on the left side. Jolikko notched her first assist of the year on the goal.

Newberry’s defense held up throughout most of the second half until the 68:29 mark. Andi Weinberg scored as the ball trickled through the center of the crease and she buried the goal in the open net.

Queens tied up the game just seconds later as the ball squirted through and Meghan Sigma scored to tie up the game at 2-2.

Newberry had a great opportunity in the first overtime. Warren and Olivia Fraunfelter had two great chances that were snuffed out by the Queens defense.

The second overtime did not see many chances but the Wolves cashed in on the opportunities they had. After Warren‘s shot was saved off the line, Newberry was awarded a penalty shot.

Jolikko stepped up to the spot and calmly buried the shot in the left corner. Newberry earned the 3-2 win to keep the winning streak alive.

Warren led Newberry with four shots. Sta’sha Waterfield and Sigma had two shots apiece for Queens.

Dakota Elzy earned her fourth win of the season. She had six saves on the night. Miranda Childers took the loss after eight saves for Queens.

Newberry will face Molloy (1-7) at Setzler Field on Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at Noon. The Wolves beat the Lions 1-0 earlier this season.
