DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Kristyna Oyola’s first career collegiate goal proved to be the game winner as the Newberry College field hockey team (3-5, 1-3 ECAC) defeated Mercy (2-7, 1-3 ECAC) 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field for the Wolves’ first ECAC win of the season.
Caitlyn Warren’s fifth goal of the season came just a 1:58 into the contest. Caitlyn Warren found herself open after Oyola’s penalty corner and she buried the ball into the net to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. The assist by Oyola marks her second of the year.
Mercy answered in the 19th minute as Vanessa Soler scored her first of the season to tie the game at 1-1. The Wolves had multiple chances after the goal. Brady Keeler had two shots and Oyola’s shot was stopped by Cheradyn Pettit.
Newberry earned a penalty stroke at the 23:02 mark but Courtlyn Warren’s effort was saved by the Mercy goaltender. The Wolves had scoring opportunities to close the first half. Kayla Cooke’s shot sailed just wide right and Oyola had an opportunity off a corner that went left of the net.
Newberry continued its strong play in the second half. Meghan Jolikko saw her effort blocked before Caitlyn Warren forced Pettit into a save.
In the 61st minute, Newberry earned a penalty corner. Courtlyn Warren found Oyola open inside the circle. Oyola ripped a shot that beat Pettit and went into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. It was Courtlyn Warren’s first assist of the season as Newberry took a 2-1 lead.
The Newberry defense held strong as the Mavericks had chances to tie the game at the end of the second half. Mercy had a penalty corner in the 69th minute, but they were stonewalled by the Wolves defenders.
Dakota Elzy earned her third win of the season and made one save on the afternoon. Oyola led the Wolves with a match-high four shots, two of which were on goal. Caitlyn Warren had three shots on net and Courtlyn Warren had two shots on goal. The Wolves totaled 15 shots as a team compared to Mercy’s eight shots.
Soler led the Mavericks with three shots and a goal. Pettit notched eight saves in the loss.
Newberry returns home from its six game road trip Tuesday. The Wolves will host Queens (4-3) in a non-conference match at Setzler Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
