BELMONT, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves picked up their first win of the season Wednesday, defeating Belmont Abbey 2-1 at Alumni Field.

Caitlyn Warren scored Newberry’s (1-2) first two goals of the season in the victory. Belmont Abbey (0-3) is an affiliate member in the ECAC Field Hockey Conference and as a result, this game will not be counted in the conference standings.

Warren put the Wolves in front just 6:42 into the contest. She blasted home a shot off a penalty corner that was taken by Kristyna Oyola. Warren scored her first goal of the season and Oyola tallied her first career assist. Newberry led at the break 1-0.

The Crusaders answered back in the second half. Tyla Goodsell-Matthews scored Belmont Abbey’s first goal in program history from the top of the circle to tie the game at 1-1. Just minutes later, Warren scored her second of the contest to put Newberry in front 2-1.

The Wolves defense held on the remainder of the game to preserve the victory. Katie Thompson had a key defensive save in the 29th minute of the second half to keep the Crusaders off the board. Dakota Elzy notched her first win of the season, saving two shots. Anna Fleetwood had four saves for Belmont Abbey in a losing effort.

The Wolves had six shots on goal as a team and 10 penalty corners. Warren led Newberry with five shots, three of which were on goal. Daja Graham had two shots on target and Meghan Jolikko notched another. Nicole Wong led the Crusaders with four shots, two of which were on goal.

Newberry’s next contest is on Friday when the Wolves travel to Gaffney to face off against Limestone (1-3, 0-1 ECAC). Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
