MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville Marauders (1-0) defeated the Newberry College field hockey team (0-1) in the season opener by a score of 5-0 Saturday afternoon at Biemesderfer Stadium.
Millersville is currently ranked as the number two team in the country after making the NCAA Tournament last season.
The game was scoreless until the 18:57 mark when Millersville’s Aliza Mizak scored her first goal of the season. A few minutes later, Newberry had an opportunity off a penalty corner when Caitlyn Warren’s shot was blocked by a defender.
The Marauders scored their second goal of the game at 26:38 when Kathleen Bishop scored her first of the year. Millersville pushed a third goal past as Mizak scored her second of the game. She corralled her own rebound after Dakota Elzy saved her initial shot.
Mizak completed the hat trick early in the second half off an assist by Margaret Thorwart. A minute later, Gabby Bazemore had her shot saved by the goalkeeper. Newberry continued to threaten as a shot by Kristyna Oyola went just wide at the 46:21 mark. The Marauders scored again to put the final score at 5-0.
Elzy saw a lot of action in goal, tallying six saves. Millersville had a total of 14 penalty corners and 22 shots in the contest. Samantha Rumler picked up the win and shutout for the Marauders.
Newberry will have their first home contest of the season on Sept. 10 when the Wolves take on Bentley. Game time is scheduled for Noon at Setzler Field.
