C.J. Frye

C.J. Frye

ALMA MATER South Carolina, '02

C.J. Frye spent his third season on staff at Newberry in 2017 and will coach the Wolves' tight ends. He previously served in the same role in the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

During the 2017 campaign, Frye helped mentor a unit that combined for 22 catches for 179 yards and three scores. Baptiste Staggers also became a weapon in the ground game when injuries forced the tight end into emergency quarterbacking duty late in the year, accounting for 101 yards and two scores over the final six quarters of the season.

Frye joins the Newberry staff following a two-year stint at Andrew Jackson High School. Frye had an 11-10 record as a head coach. In 2016, the Volunteers' 8-3 record and playoff appearance represented their first winning season since 1997. Frye earned Coach of the Year awards from the Lancaster News and Tri-County Football Coaches Association.

Frye has coached at a plethora of institutions, holding assistant coaching positions at Westside, A.C. Flora, McCormick, and Hilton Head High Schools. He has spent time in the college ranks on the Benedict, Tennessee State, South Carolina, and South Carolina State sidelines. Frye served as a graduate assistant under both Lou Holtz (2004) and Steve Spurrier (2005) while with the Gamecocks, mentoring current Newberry offensive line coach Na'Shan Goddard. The pair also played together in 2001 and 2002.

Frye is a native of Columbia and a 1999 graduate of Irmo High School. He graduated from South Carolina with a B.A. in accounting in 2002. He earned his Masters in Hotel Restaurant and Tourism Management from South Carolina in 2005.

He was a four-year starter at South Carolina, a three year member of the all SEC academic team and played on two Outback Bowl championship teams. He is the son of legendary track and field coach Curtis Frye.
