ROCK HILL – Junior wide receiver Markell Castle has been named AstroTurf SAC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career after catching six passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns in Newberry's heart-stopping 25-21 win at Carson-Newman.
Castle's 30-yard catch with 39.3 seconds remaining lifted the Wolves to their school-record 11th consecutive South Atlantic Conference victory. He caught the Nick Jones pass at the 21, ducked under a tackle as a member of the Eagles' secondary slid over his back, slipped out of another tackle at the 14, and scampered into the end zone for the game-winning score.
His earlier score came on a 3rd and goal from the 12 as he went in motion prior to the snap and dove to corral the ball as he crossed the goal line. Castle's catch gave the Wolves their first opening-drive touchdown since Nov. 5, 2016. In all, five of his six receptions went for touchdowns or first downs.

Castle is now tied with Brandon Bostick (2008-11) for third in school history with six career 100-yard receiving game. His 11 career touchdown receptions are tied for 10th in program history with Troyka Bates (1995-98) and Darryl Owings (1984-86), while his 1,300 career receiving yards place him 112 yards shy of matching Cole Watson (2013-16) for 10th place in the Newberry record book.
Wingate teammates Matthew Ellis-White and Freddy McCollum were named the league's Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively.
