NEWBERRY – The Newberry College Wolves football team held their Scarlet and Gray spring game today on historic Setzler Field just after the annual alumni game.
The Wolves split up their team into two teams for today’s game, one team wearing all scarlet and the other team wearing all gray. The first quarter opened up with a big play from the scarlet team as quarterback Nick Jones hit Darius Clark in stride to complete a 77 yard touchdown pass. The Gray team came out for their first possession and topped the big play with an 80 yard touchdown pass from Summer Cooler to J.T. Waters. The first quarter ended in a 7-7 tie.
The second quarter opened up an each team kicking a field goal. The scarlet team’s defense held the gray team multiple times including a three and out on the one yard line after Jones had hit Clark for a 75 yard pick up.
The red team scored the lone touchdown in the second quarter when Jones hit Markell Castle for a 68 yard TD. The gray side couldn’t get anything going in the quarter as Wesley Turner was picked off by Avery Shippy which closed out the half with scarlet leading 17-10.
The third quarter was a lot of see-saw action with multiple three and outs. With five minutes left in the quarter Jimmy Holmes of the gray team sacked Jones to force a punt as time was winding down in the quarter.
Marc Rosemond snagged an interception to bring a scarlet team drive to a halt, but the gray team was held to a three-and-out. Baptiste Staggers caught the ball on a pitch pass and ran for 58 yards.
The game ended with the scarlet team winning 27-13. The Wolves will open up their fall season with a home game against Florida Tech on September 3.
