NEWBERRY – Newberry College senior wide receiver Cole Watson was invited to the Toronto Argonauts mini-camp which took place from April 25-27 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. After a successful mini-camp, Watson signed a two-year deal with the Argonauts and will be heading to the team's training camp starting on May 22.
Watson, a native of Conway, South Carolina, was a four-year member of the Newberry football team. He was selected first team all-South Atlantic Conference for the first time in his career this past season after totaling 660 yards on 49 receptions, scoring six touchdowns.
"We are so very proud of Cole and we have always known two things about him, he is a great football player and an even better person; that is why he is a success and will continue to be," said Newberry head football coach Todd Knight.
"We wish him and his new family, the Argonauts, all the luck in the world," replied Knight.
Watson finished fifth in the SAC in receiving yards and had three 100-yard receiving games on the year. The wideout was also a member of the Order of the Gray Stripe, Newberry Football's honor council.
Watson ranks eighth all-time in Newberry history in receptions (115) and tenth all-time in career receiving yards (1,412). The Conway native was the South Atlantic Conference’s statistical champion in punt return average (10.9 yards per return) during the 2015 season.
The Argonauts, who compete in the Canadian Football League, are one of the league’s most successful franchises, winning a CFL-record 16 Grey Cups.
Watson will graduate from Newberry College on May 6 with a degree in Physical Education.
