Charleston Southern pulls out of 2015 football game at Newberry

NEWBERRY - Newberry College athletic director Matt Finley and head football coach Todd Knight have announced that Charleston Southern University has officially cancelled the contract for the football contest scheduled between the two schools on September 12, 2015. Newberry will now look for an opponent to complete the 2015 schedule.

The cancellation by CSU is a trickle-down effect of the cancellation of the football program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), which was announced in December 2014. The Blazers' disbanding of the football program left a hole in the schedule of Troy University in Week Two. The Trojans then scheduled Charleston Southern for that date, prompting the Buccaneers to cancel their date with Newberry.

Newberry was poised to be one of the very few NCAA Division II teams to host a Division I-FCS team in football action prior to the CSU cancellation. Newberry has hosted Division I-FCS opposition nine times since moving from NAIA to NCAA Division II in 1991.

"While we are disappointed in Charleston Southern's decision to cancel the 2015 meeting, we look forward to bringing another quality opponent to Setzler Field this year," Finley said. "We still have a chance to have six home games for the best fans in Division II and we hope to line up the opposition in the near future."

Newberry currently has 10 of the 11 available weeks in the 2015 football schedule filled. Those 10 games are evenly split between five home contests and five games on the road. North Greenville, Tusculum, Mars Hill, Brevard and Limestone are set to visit Setzler Field, while the scarlet and gray are scheduled to travel to Florida Tech, Catawba, Carson-Newman, Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate.
