ROCK HILL - Newberry College seniors A.J. Booker and Byron Dickerson have been named AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Players of the Week following the Wolves' 46-21 victory over No. 24 Carson-Newman on Saturday. Booker earned SAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, while Dickerson won SAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
A.J. Booker (Spartanburg, S.C.) had a spectacular all-around game at his outside linebacker position. The senior Academic All-America candidate totaled nine tackles with three tackles for loss. He also forced a fumble on the defense's second play of the game and snagged an interception, which he returned 14 yards to set up the Wolves' third touchdown of the first quarter.
For the season, Booker has three interceptions, which is tied for fourth-most in the SAC overall and the most by a linebacker. He has totaled 39 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss, a sack, a fumble recovery and touchdown return, forced fumble and four total passes defended.
This is his second AstroTurf SAC Player of the Week honor this season. He is a three-time CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District winner, national semifinalist for the National Football Foundation's Campbell Trophy and candidate for CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America honors.
Byron Dickerson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) earned SAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors after scoring three touchdowns for Newberry on three touches in the first quarter.
His tackle-breaking 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown put Newberry up 26-7 with 3:08 remaining in the first quarter. The senior also had touchdown catches of 8 and 7 yards earlier in the first quarter.
This is Dickerson's first career SAC Player of the Week honor.
