ROCK HILL - Newberry College linebacker Taylor McDonnell and return specialist Kevin Miller have been named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Players of the Week on defense and special teams, as announced by the conference office Monday.
McDonnell (Bluffton, S.C.) led a phenomenal defensive effort in the Wolves' 33-10 win over Wingate. The Wolves allowed only 3 points to the Bulldogs' offense on 140 yards of offense and only 25 rushing yards.
McDonnell had six tackles in the game, including three tackles for loss, half a sack and two quarterback hurries. He also posted Newberry's first defensive score of the season, recovering a Wingate fumble in the endzone for a touchdown in the third quarter.
McDonnell currently ranks second on the team and in the conference with 9.5 tackles for loss on the year, ranking 12th nationally in that category.
Miller (Lexington, S.C.) has been spectacular in the return game all season and was excellent again against Wingate. He averaged 21.5 yards per punt return on two returns, matching his season average and bumping him up to third in the national rankings in that category. Miller is far and away the punt return leader in the conference, over 13 yards per return better than the second placer at that category currently.
He also had an average of 19.2 yards per kickoff return and two carries for seven yards in the Wingate game.
Today's honored duo become the second and third Newberry players honored with SAC Player of the Week honors this year, joining A.J. Booker, who was defensive player of the week for the Limestone game.
