NEWBERRY - The Newberry College football team opened preparations for the 2014 season Wednesday afternoon with the Wolves' first practice session.
While the team cannot don pads for a few days, the tempo and attitude in the opening session was still lively in the summer heat according to Wolves' head coach Todd Knight.
"Day one of practice... The energy level is always off the charts," Knight said. "The trick to it during camp is - at practice 12 and 13, is the energy level the same? You're looking for that continuity. You don't want a lot of peaks and valleys. For day one, the enthusiasm was definitely there."
Knight was pleased with the condition and fitness of his squad and its newcomers coming off of the summer break.
"I'd say we're in pretty good shape. We've got a kid or two that got banged up here and there, but I think we'll be at full strength in a day or two."
Even with the enthusiastic start coming off of the 9-3 playoff season, Knight is tempering expectations until later in 2014 preparations.
"I think I've been asked all summer of long - 'How's the team look?' Before you actually walk out here, it's hard to answer that question. You've got an idea; you think you have a chance to be decent, and it's still too early to call to tell you the truth. I think we've got some talent, I think in some places we could be better than we were last year, but in some places I don't think we're quite as good as we were last year."
Camp resumes Thursday with 9:30 a.m. practices at Setzler Field every day until class starts Wednesday, August 20. All practices are open to the public.
