NEWBERRY - Newberry College and the Florida Institute of Technology have announced the completion of a contract for the two institutions to play football games in the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
The two schools will play at Palm Bay High School in Melbourne, Fla., on September 5, 2015, with the return leg of the contract coming at Newberry's historic Setzler Field on September 3, 2016.
The contract completes Newberry's 2015 schedule with six home games - including Division I opponent Charleston Southern - and five road games. The 2016 schedule still has one open date remaining with five home games and five road games on the schedule at this point.
The 2015 game will be Newberry's first trip to Florida for a football game since closing the season at Webber International in Lake Wales in 2004. The Melbourne trip will be the southernmost football game for the scarlet and gray since playing at the University of Tampa in 1934 and 1936.
Newberry and FIT met for the first time in the 2013 season with the Wolves defeated the Panthers by a 23-19 score at Setzler Field in the Panthers' second-ever game.
FIT is a member of the Division II Gulf South Conference in football, while playing in the Sunshine State Conference in its other sports. The Panthers went 5-7 overall and 1-5 in the GSC in their first season with a win over fellow first-year program Alderson Broaddus in the ECAC Futures Bowl.
The current Wolves are preparing for the 2014 season with their spring practice schedule at this time. The Spring Game is on April 12 as part of SpringFest.
