Monday, November 18, 2013

WACO, Texas - After finishing the regular season with a 9-2 overall record, the Newberry Wolves are ranked No. 25 nationally in the latest American Football Coaches' Association Division II Coaches' Poll, released Monday.

The Wolves enter the NCAA Division II playoffs this Saturday for the second time in school history, following in the footsteps of the 2006 team which advanced to the second round.

This ranking marks Newberry's fourth week in the top 25 this season and 27th ranking in the poll since it debuted in 2000. Newberry is 16-10 as a top 25 team.

This week's opponent is ranked as well, with the Carson-Newman Eagles sitting at No. 18 in the poll. This weekend's playoff tilt will be the fourth time the two schools have met as top 25 teams. Newberry was ranked 21st and Carson-Newman was ranked 25th two weeks ago when the Eagles earned a 52-31 win in Jefferson City, Tenn.

Two past opponents are ranked, with UNC Pembroke at No. 8 and Lenoir-Rhyne at No. 13. The winner of the Newberry/Carson-Newman game travels to Lenoir-Rhyne for the second round of the playoffs next week.
