Booker, Sobocinski named Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Newberry College linebacker A.J. Booker and center Evan Sobocinski have been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-Super Region II team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

With their selections to the Academic All-Super Region team, Booker and Sobocinski advance to the ballot for Academic All-America honors.

Booker, a junior from Spartanburg and graduate of Dorman High School, earns Academic All-District honors for the second consecutive year. He carries a 3.81 grade point average with a major in nursing and minor in biology. He has been selected to the Newberry Dean's List in each semester he has been enrolled, has twice been named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll and has earned the Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award once. He also serves as a resident advisor. On the field, he has 16 tackles this season with his top game coming on Homecoming against Tusculum, making seven tackles with a sack and forced fumble. He is a member of the Order of the Gray Stripe.

Sobocinski, a sophomore from Lexington and graduate of Lexington High School, earns his first Academic All-District honor. He carries a 3.85 grade point average with a double major in business administration and education. He was named to the Newberry College all-academic team following his redshirt freshman season for carrying the highest grade point average on the football team. A member of the Order of the Gray Stripe, the center has helped lead one of the most balanced offenses in the nation to an 8-1 record to start this season. He has been named to the Newberry Dean's List in each semester he has been enrolled, is a member of the Summerland Honors Society and Phi Beta Lambda.

Newberry's two Academic All-District selections are tied for the most of schools in South Carolina this year, as Coastal Carolina and Wofford also had two selections apiece. Benedict, The Citadel and South Carolina had one selection apiece.

The South Atlantic Conference dominated the Super Region II listing with 16 selections, while independents had five and the Gulf South and SIAC each had once selection.

The Academic All-America team will be released on December 4.
