ROCK HILL - Newberry College wide receiver Corey Washington has been named the South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday.
Washington, a senior from North Charleston, had five receptions for 148 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday as Newberry remained in contention for a share of the SAC title with a 28-21 win over Brevard.
Washington had touchdown receptions of six and 67 yards in the first half before later hauling in the eventual game-winning score from 29 yards out in the fourth quarter. Washington followed the late score by catching a two-point conversion to give the Wolves a seven-point advantage.
The senior became just the fifth player in Newberry history to catch three touchdowns in a single game. He leads the SAC in touchdown receptions this season with 11, which are the second most by a Newberry receiver in a single season with two regular season games remaining. His 20 career touchdown receptions are second in a career only to Tymere Zimmerman's SAC-record 40.
Also receiving SAC honors this week were Lenoir-Rhyne defensive lineman Jimmy Long and kicker Zach Neumann.
