ROCK HILL - Newberry College senior outside linebacker Mike Hopkins has been named the South Atlantic Conference defensive player of the week for his performance in Saturday's 24-21 win over then-No. 8/12 UNC Pembroke.
Hopkins, from Blackstock and a graduate of Fairfield Central HS, had two crucial plays in a big defensive night. In the second quarter, he sacked UNCP quarterback Luke Charles in the endzone for a safety, which gave the Wolves an 11-7 lead at the time.
Late in the fourth quarter, he sacked Charles again, this time while also forcing a fumble which Newberry recovered. Three plays later, Newberry scored the game-winning touchdown to earn the school's second-ever win over an NCAA top 10 opponent.
On the night, Hopkins had a total of six tackles to tie for the team lead, with three tackles for losses of 19 yards, two sacks for losses of 17 yards and the forced fumble.
He has 36 tackles on the season with 4.5 tackles for loss.
Other honorees from the conference this week are Carson-Newman quarterback De'Andre Thomas and Tusculum kick returner Justin Houston.
