ROCK HILL - Newberry College sophomore kicker/punter Kyle Clark has been named the South Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday.
Clark, who hails from Beaufort, was instrumental in Newberry's 27-0 shutout victory at Catawba on Saturday, accounting for nine points while also performing well on kickoffs and punts.
Clark made field goals of 21 and 24 yards while also going 3-for-3 on PAT attempts. In the punting game, he averaged 42.0 yards per punt on six attempts, handling snaps and pressure well despite less than ideal weather conditions. Clark's hang time on punts was also excellent, as Catawba managed only two returns for minus-1 yard, making the team's net yardage on punt plays longer than his punting average.
He also averaged 58 yards per kickoff with a pair of touchbacks, and Catawba's average starting field position was its own 29-yardline.
For the season, Clark is averaging 36.7 yards per punt, with no touchbacks and two inside the opponents' 20-yardline.
Also honored this week were Lenoir-Rhyne quarterback Miles Freeman and L-R linebacker Joe Anderson.
