KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Former Newberry College cornerback Kamaal McIlwain has been signed to a contract by the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs, as announced by the club Thursday.
With McIlwain's signing by the Chiefs, there are now three former Newberry players on NFL rosters. Safety Ron Parker is entering his third season with the Seattle Seahawks, while tight end Brandon Bostick is making an impression in his second season with the Green Bay Packers.
The Chiefs are McIlwain's fourth NFL team, as he has spent time on rosters with the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints.
In his career at Newberry, McIlwain made a total of 93 tackles with six interceptions, 24 pass defenses, two fumble recoveries, four blocked kicks and two touchdowns. As a senior in 2010, McIlwain posted 25 tackles (20 solo), two interceptions and eight pass defenses. He also averaged 33 yards per kickoff return including an 80-yard return for a touchdown.
Kansas City's first preseason game is on Friday, August 9, at New Orleans. The Chiefs host the San Francisco 49ers on Friday, August 16, and travel to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers on Saturday, August 24.
