NEWBERRY - Corey Washington reeled in his fourth touchdown pass of the day as time expired to give the Scarlet squad a 35-28 win over the Gray squad in Newberry College's annual spring game at Setzler Field on Saturday.
This year's game featured a draft of the players by the team captains into two equal squads. Big plays by both offenses highlighted the day.
For Scarlet, quarterback Zach Blair completed 13-of-20 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns, while Gray quarterback Raleigh Yeldell completed 15-of-21 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns. In a split squad role, W.T. Murden completed 8-of-12 passes with one touchdown.
Washington had four catches for four touchdowns of 13, 50, 61 and 18 yards for a total of 142 yards, while Troy Thompson had seven receptions for 129 yards and a 61-yard touchdown for Scarlet. Jason Livingston had three catches for 77 yards and a 23-yard touchdown, while Jalen Cook caught a 61-yard touchdown pass for Gray.
Yeldell was Gray's leading rusher with 69 yards on 12 carries and Cliff Jones' 8-yard TD carry was the only rushing score of the day.
Scarlet captain B.J. Mazyck led all players with six tackles, while his team had six sacks and nine tackles for a loss. Jamal Bethune had 2.5 sacks and Dominique Jacobs had two sacks. Brett Borders also had two TFLs and forced a fumble on fourth down to setup the final Scarlet TD drive.
For Gray, captain Dominique Walker had five tackles and a sack, while Stan Davis also notched a sack.
