Bostick, Ehrlich named SAC Offensive Players of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. - After spectacular performances in Newberry College's 63-56 road win over then-No. 23 Tusculum College on Saturday, the Wolves' quarterback Bryan Ehrlich and wide receiver Brandon Bostick have both been named the South Atlantic Conference's Offensive Players of the Week, as announced by the league office today. Mars Hill's Rudy Cabral was named the SAC Defensive Player of the week and his teammate Josh Baker was named Special Teams Player of the Week.

While the conference normally only recognizes one player of the week in each category, record-shattering performances by Bostick (Florence, S.C.) and Ehrlich (San Antonio, Texas) led the conference office to name both players to the honor.

Bostick established a new record for receiving yards in a game for the South Atlantic Conference, Newberry College and the state of South Carolina, catching 11 passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns of 37, 71 and 50 yards. He averaged 29.3 yards per completion, with nine of his 11 catches resulting in Newberry first downs. This feat is even more impressive considering he caught a batted ball behind the line of scrimmage for minus-6 yards. The performance ranks eighth in the history of Division II football, just one yard behind the seventh-best game. His game breaks the previous SAC and state record of 275 yards set by Presbyterian's D.J. Humphries against West Georgia in 2001, as well as the previous Newberry College record of 200 yards set by Derrick Higgins against North Greenville in 2003.

Ehrlich set the conference and school records for touchdown passes and touchdown responsibility while setting a Newberry record for passing yardage. He went 23-of-40 for 515 yards and seven touchdowns of 37, 71, 36, 36, 2, 50 and 11 yards. He also rushed for a 1-yard touchdown, making him responsible for eight total touchdowns in the game. His 515-yard performance breaks the previous Newberry record of 448 yards set by Eric McCollom at Tusculum in 2008 and is second in state history behind Presbyterian's Todd Cunningham, who had 542 yards against Tusculum in 2001 to set the SAC record. Ehrlich's performance ranks third in the SAC record books. Ehrlich averaged 22.4 yards per completion in the game. He now has 20 touchdown passes on the season and in his career, which ties him for third most in a single season and seventh most in a career at Newberry College.

Rudy Cabral led the Lions' defense with a career-high 19 total tackles, which included a career-high 15 solo tackles. He added 2.5 sacks and helped MHC hold Lenoir-Rhyne to 351 total yards. His performance has helped lead the Lions to a 2-0 SAC record so far this season. He wins the award for the second time this season.

Josh Baker returned a blocked punt 12 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 17-all with 2:25 left in the first half. The special teams score proved to be crucial as the Lions won 24-20 to remain unbeaten in league play. He added seven tackles including six solo from his linebacker position. Baker was the SAC Defensive Player of the Week last week.

All four SAC Players of the Week will face off against each other in a battle of SAC unbeatens on Saturday afternoon. Newberry (3-2 overall, 2-0 SAC) travels to Mars Hill (4-2, 2-0 SAC) for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
