NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Gray squad defeated the Scarlet team, 23-6, in Newberry College's annual spring football game in front of an impressively large crowd at Setzler Field on Saturday.

In the first spring game under head coach Todd Knight, the team was "drafted" into two teams instead of the offense-vs.-defense format. The defenses of both squads made it hard for the offenses to get going early, but the Gray team earned 254 yards of offense on the strength of 156 rushing yards. A highlight for both teams was the low figure of only 45 total penalty yards.

Neither team could put points on the board in the first quarter, but redshirt freshman John Gadson (North Charleston, S.C. / Stall HS) made the first big play of the game, streaking up the middle for a 66-yard touchdown after a 12-yard completion from Shakur Pontoon (Lexington, S.C. / Airport HS) to Tony Curtis (Greenville, S.C. / Greenville HS) gave the Gray squad a first down. The long TD rush gave Gray a 7-0 lead. Gadson would finish the game as the leading rusher, carrying the ball six times for 91 yards.

Scarlet responded just a few minutes later, as Terrence Wilson (Mayesville, S.C. / Crestwood HS) scampered for a 41-yard touchdown run, but the PAT was missed, making it 7-6. The Scarlet team's Josh Funderburk (Lugoff, S.C. / Dillon Christian School) intercepted a pass by Parker Hite (Ninety Six, S.C. / Ninety Six HS) inside his own 10-yardline, but an errant snap on the next play gave Gray a safety and a 9-6 halftime lead.

The passing game set up Gray's third score of the game. After starting at the Scarlet 44, Hite connected with David Pressley (Anderson, S.C. / Westside HS) for completions of 18 and 25 yards, with the latter coming on fourth down to put Gray at the Scarlet 1-yardline. Lyndon Ingram (Columbia, S.C. / Spring Valley HS) punched it in on the next play to make it 16-6. Gray capped the scoring in the fourth quarter when Chris Hames (Blacksburg, S.C. / Blacksburg HS) took an end-around into the endzone from 11 yards out.

Pressley was the leading receiver for both teams with six receptions for 62 yards, while Brandon Bostick (Florence, S.C. / West Florence HS) caught three passes for 47 yards for the Scarlet team. The defensive backfields combined for five interceptions, as Funderburk led the way with both picks for the Scarlet side. Kamaal McIlwain (Van Wyck, S.C. / Indian Land HS), Corvelle Fowler (Taylors, S.C. / Blue Ridge HS) and Brooks Burnette (Bonneau, S.C. / Timberland HS) each had picks for the Gray squad.

Jason Myers (Kingstree, S.C. / Kingstree HS / Feather River [Calif.] College) and Adrian Stewart (North Charleston, S.C. / Fort Dorchester HS) each recorded sacks.
