KINGSVILLE, Texas - Newberry College linebacker/cornerback Andre Moyd has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2010 Valero Cactus Bowl, it was announced today.

The Valero Cactus Bowl is an NCAA Division II all-star football game in its 16th year. The game will be played on January 8, 2010, at 6:35 CST at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Played in an East vs. West format, the teams are comprised entirely of the 'best of the best' NCAA Division II college seniors.

"This is a great honor for Andre and for Newberry College football," head coach Todd Knight said. "The thing that makes Andre such a great player is his versatility. He can play at least three different positions on defense and has proven that at Newberry College.

"He has been a starter and made all-South Atlantic Conference at two different positions and had a great game as a cornerback at the East Coast Bowl after not playing that position in nearly a year. He is a great player and a great person and I'm very proud he has earned this recognition," Knight added.

Moyd, a senior from Andrews, S.C., was a first team all-SAC honoree at linebacker in 2009. He was Newberry's second leading tackler with 51 tackles after moving to linebacker from cornerback this season. He ranked in the top 25 in the conference in stops and recovered three fumbles, which tied for second in the league. He also forced two fumbles this season.

At the 2009 East Coast Bowl in Petersburg, Va., Moyd recorded six total tackles for the South squad, including five solo stops. This will be Moyd's second all-star game for this season.

Moyd becomes the third Newberry College player to participate in the Cactus Bowl. Center Zack Farr represented the scarlet and gray in the 2006 game and cornerback Jonathan Lyles participated in the 2005 game, sealing a win for the East squad with an interception of Pittsburg State's Neal Philpot on the West's final drive.
