ROCK HILL, S.C. - Newberry College senior quarterback Brandon Gantt (Lexington, S.C.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office today.
Gantt completed 25-of-39 passes for 333 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in Newberry's 31-24 win over nationally ranked Valdosta State on Saturday. All three of Gantt's touchdown passes were over 25 yards. He also carried the ball six times for 35 yards and was not sacked during the game.
The senior etched his name in the Newberry record books with the performance, as his 333 yards and 25 completions are both the ninth-most in school history. Gantt is a two-time SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll selection and was an ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 honoree in 2008.
Other SAC Player of the Week recipients were Wingate's Robert Fletcher (defensive) and Lenoir-Rhyne's Cam Thompkins (special teams).
Fletcher, a redshirt freshman from Lancaster, S.C., set a school record with a 98-yard interception return for a score with 29.4 seconds to play in the contest as Wingate rallied for a 38-17 victory over West Georgia. Fletcher had a huge day in his first game in the Bulldog blue-and-gold. He added six tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery to his 98-yard interception return for paydirt. Wingate forced five turnovers, intercepting four passes and recovering one fumble.
Thompkins, a sophomore defensive back, came up with a couple of big plays in preserving Lenoir-Rhyne's 21-14 victory over Shorter College, the 11th-ranked NAIA school, Saturday night in the season opener at Moretz Stadium. In addition to recovering a fumble on the game's first play that set up a touchdown, the Sanford, Fla., native blocked a field goal and recovered the ball on another blocked field goal in the first half.
The players of the week are selected by the staff at the South Atlantic Conference office.
