NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College wide receiver Kelton Tindal has been named the South Atlantic Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year by D2Football.com, the Web site announced today. A total of four Newberry players are on D2Football.com's preseason all-SAC team.

Tindal, a senior from Sumter, S.C., was Newberry's leading receiver, scorer and kick blocker in the 2008 season and is projected to improve on those numbers in 2009. He had 39 catches for 745 yards and six touchdowns as a junior. He also recorded two rushing touchdowns and his 48 points led the team. He was fourth in the league in receiving yards per game and fifth in receptions per game. He ranked 47th nationally in receiving yards per game and had four games with over 100 yards receiving. He was named a preseason First Team All-SAC selection by the conference this season and was a DAKTRONICS All-Super Region Two second team selection last season. Tindal was also named to the Orangeburg Touchdown Club's All-State team.

Including Tindal, four Newberry players are on D2Football.com's preseason all-SAC team. Center Matt Holmes (Johnston, S.C.), defensive tackle Andre Clark (Rock Hill, S.C.) and cornerback Kamaal McIlwain (Van Wyck, S.C.) round out Newberry's selections.

Holmes, a junior, earns his second preseason honor as one of the league's top centers after the conference named him to its preseason first team. Andre Clark earns his first preseason honor after ranking fifth in the conference in sacks per game last year. McIlwain earns his second preseason honor after earning second team all-SAC honors last season and winning the conference Player of the Week award on two occassions. He was also a second team All-Super Region Two honoree by DAKTRONICS in 2008.

The scarlet and gray wrap up preseason camp this week in preparation for the season opener at Valdosta State on August 29. Kickoff at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium in Valdosta is slated for 7 p.m. that day. The home opener comes on September 19, as Newberry hosts Cumberland (Tenn.) University for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Call (803) 321-5101 or email tickets@newberry.edu for ticket information.
