NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Scarlet team defeated the Gray team by a 28-21 scoreline in the annual Newberry College Spring Football Game at Setzler Field on Saturday monring. The Gray (first unit) started the game trailing by 28 points, and an offensive comeback fell just short in the fourth quarter.
Quarterbacks Bryan Ehrlich (San Antonio, Texas) and Brandon Gantt (Lexington, S.C.) each connected on touchdown passes with Kelton Tindal (Sumter, S.C.) in the fourth quarter. Tindal caught two passes for 38 yards, both for touchdowns.
Ehrlich completed 12-of-21 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. Gantt completed 11-of-18 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions. Lyndon Ingram (Columbia, S.C.) was the leading rusher with six carries for 39 yards, while Alkeem Sherman (Conway, S.C.) carried the ball 11 times for 37 yards.
The gray had a chance to tie the game and send it to overtime with six seconds left on the clock, but an Ehrlich pass for David Pressley fell incomplete just short of the end zone to give the Scarlet team the win.
Antonio Patton (Woodruff, S.C.) put the first unit's initial points on the board in the opening quarter with a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown off of Gantt. Brooks Burnette (Bonneau, S.C.) and Andre Moyd (Andrews, S.C.) each recorded interceptions in the first half as well.
Defensively, Dejjon Lee and Arterio Arnold tied for the lead with five tackles apiece. Arnold recorded one and a half sacks and two and half tackles for loss. All told, the defensive units combined for three sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Will Britton and Jonathan Stone added four tackles apiece.
