WACO, Texas - The Newberry College football team is ranked No. 21 nationally in this week's American Football Coaches' Association Division II Coaches' Poll, which was released today.

Newberry (1-1) moved up one spot from No. 22 after the scarlet and gray's 41-3 romp over visiting North Greenville University last Thursday. Will Newell (Irmo, S.C.) earned SAC Defensive Player of the Week honors after making 15 tackles in just over one half of play. NC received 147 votes in this week's poll, just seven votes back of No. 20 Central Missouri.

Newberry enters into its toughest stretch of play this week according to the pollsters. NC travels to Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, this week. The MSU Mustangs (2-0) received 24 votes this week, which places them just six votes out of the Top 25. Tied with MSU is Wingate University (3-0), which visits Newberry on October 18.

Next week's opponent, Carson-Newman College (2-1), is ranked 11th this week after a 59-18 road win over Bentley (Mass.) last week. The following week's foe, Catawba College (2-1), finds itself just four votes out of the poll with 26 votes. Both teams will visit Setzler Field to open Newberry's South Atlantic Conference slate. Tusculum College (2-1), who Newberry visits on October 25, is also receiving votes in the poll.

The Newberry vs. Midwestern State game kicks off at Wichita Falls Memorial Stadium this Saturday at 8 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. local). Fans can listen to the game on WKDK-AM 1240 in Newberry County and on the World Wide Web at www.WKDK.com or www.RedZoneMedia.com.
