Newberry ranked No. 22 in AFCA poll
Tuesday, September 9, 2008 | by Scarlet and gray drop one spot after off week

WACO, Texas - The Newberry College football team is ranked 22nd nationally in the latest American Football Coaches' Association Division II Coaches' Poll, which was released today.

Newberry (0-1) dropped one spot in the poll after an off week last week. Losses by Carson-Newman, California (Pa.), Chadron State and Delta State in the Top 10 caused major fluctuation throughout the poll.

The ranking marks the 20th week Newberry has been ranked in the Division II poll since its inception in 2000, and the sixth consecutive poll in which Newberry appears in the Top 25.

Carson-Newman is the only other South Atlantic Conference team in the Top 25, coming in at No. 12, an eight-spot drop from last week after losing to North Alabama. Valdosta State remains in the top spot. Other Newberry opponents receiving votes include Midwestern State, Tusculum, Catawba and Wingate.

Newberry returns to action Thursday night, as the scarlet and gray welcome North Greenville University to Setzler Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Thursday's game has been dubbed Service Appreciation Night. All military, police, fire, first responders and other service personnel and one guest will be admitted free with I.D.
