WACO, Texas - The Newberry College football team is ranked 21st nationally in the latest American Football Coaches' Association Division II Coaches' Poll, which was released Tuesday.

Newberry (0-1) dropped its season opener to top-ranked Valdosta State University, 14-9, at Setzler Field on Saturday. Will Newell (Irmo, S.C.) was named the South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after recording nine tackles in the game.

The Eagles host No. 3 North Alabama on Thursday night. Catawba dropped out of the poll following a 14-7 loss to St. Augustine's.

Other Newberry opponents receiving votes in the poll include Tusculum, Catawba and Midwestern St.

Newberry has the week off and returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 11, when North Greenville visits Setzler Field. Newberry holds on 8-0 lead in the all-time series against NGU.
