NEWBERRY, S.C. - Plenty of hard work, lots of improvement and an enthusiastic atmosphere surrounded Friday afternoon's practice session at Setzler Field as the Newberry College football team prepared for tomorrow morning's intra-squad scrimmage.
Head Football Coach Zak Willis:
On Friday's practice session: "There were a lot of good things today," Willis said. "I thought our offense did exceptionally well picking up the blitz. For this point in camp, our young guys got a lots of reps and really showed up well."
"John Carnell (Hanahan) continues to impress at quarterback and the offensive line looked good. As far as running backs go, Tharry Salley (Blackville) and Gerald Legree (Beaufort) continue to do well, and Lyndon Ingram (Spring Valley) did a lot of good things today, and of lot of it was not just running, but picking up the blitz and blocking as well."
"Our defensive backs have continued to step things up and there's been a lot of competition between them and the wide receivers. The defensive line has continued to play well in pads and the linebackers are very solid. We saw a lot of good things out of every group today. Of course, there are always things you'd like to improve, but I was very happy with what I saw."
On goals for Saturday's scrimmage: "Mainly, we'll be evaluating and trying to decide who's going to play this year and who's not. Jared Shaw (freshman safety, Fort Mill) has really started to come on, and we'd like to see how guys like him will do. We want to see if we can drive the football on offense and how we play situationally on defense and how we handle pressure. We saw a little bit of that today, but now it's a matter of ranking these guys so we can develop our scheme and strategy for the season."
Saturday's open intra-squad scrimmage will begin at 10 a.m. at Setzler Field.
