SALISBURY, N.C. - The Newberry College football team garnered seven preseason all-South Atlantic Conference selections and was revealed as the second place pick in the annual preseason coaches poll at the league's media day Friday.

Offensive lineman Jonathan Dailey (Clinton, S.C.) and return specialist Antonio Patton (Woodruff, S.C.) were named to the first team offense, while defensive back Temarcus Thompson (Greenville, S.C.) was named to the first team defense. Thompson tied for the conference lead with four interceptions in 2007.

Also named to the second team were offensive lineman Marchent Faustin (Summerville, S.C.), wide reciever David Smith (Union, S.C.), linebacker Will Newell (Irmo, S.C.) and safety Derrell Mills (Gray Court, S.C.). Newberry's seven selections are the third most in the conference this season.

The scarlet and gray came in second in the preseason coaches' poll behind Carson-Newman College. Newberry earned one first place vote and a total of 50 points, behind C-N's 62 and ahead of Catawba's 46 points.

Defending South Atlantic Conference champion Carson-Newman College leads the 2008 preseason All-Conference football team with 14 selections.

The Eagles had 11 players named to the first team, with five on the offense and six on the defense. Carson-Newman returns several offensive stalwarts from last year's offense which ranked among the nation's best including quarterback Alex Good, running back Buck Wakefield and wide receiver Reggie Hubbard. Tight end Mo Whitten and offensive lineman Ross Shafer were also named to the first team. On defense, the Eagles should be strong up front, with linemen Darius Wrentz and Brandon Harmon named to the first team. In the defensive backfield, the Eagles have a pair of preseason first-team selections in Denares Waites and Otis Ballard. Linebacker Brian Brown adds to the Eagles defensive presence on the first team.

Tusculum College had 11 preseason All-Conference selections, with five selected to the first team.

Wide receiver Ryan Tallent, who led the SAC with 59 receptions last year, is on the first team along with placekicker Gareth Rowlands. On defense, the Pioneers bring back a pair of the league's best linebackers in Justin Scott and Jarvis Littlejohn. Littlejohn had 85 tackles last season, fourth best in the league. Defensive back Jeremy Thompson was also a first team honoree.

Catawba College has 10 representatives on the preseason All-Conference, including four first team picks,

Two offensive linemen - Terence Crosby and Hunter Carnes - were selected to the first team offense, while lineman Melquan Fair and linebacker Charles McAfee were selected to the first team defense.

Wingate University has six on the preseason All-Conference team. The Bulldogs have three on the preseason All-Conference first team offense in running back Nelson Woods, the 2007 Offensive Freshman of the Year, wide receiver Shawn Barrett, and offensive lineman Cam LeGrand.

Mars Hill College has six preseason All-Conference selections, with a pair named to the first team. Running back George Washington, who ranked second in the league in yards per game, and defensive lineman Chris Dowdell are the first team selections for the Lions.

Lenoir-Rhyne University has three preseason All-Conference picks. Jordon Simmons was a first-team selection as long snapper.

Brevard College had one preseason All-Conference pick in running back John Taylor, who was named to the second team.
